Description

Prisoner name(s): William Henly.

Prisoner occupation: Clerk.

Court and date of trial: Surrey Winter Assizes held at Kingston December 1824.

Crime: Obtaining money under false pretences - £1 3s 6d from Mr Thomas Sutton of Mitcham Surrey in October 1824.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Henry Gardner, auctioneer of Rotherhithe, employer; 32 people mostly of Shoreham Sussex; two petitions from the convict.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Convict very respectable, honest sober and steady; was unemployed and driven by distress; he would be reemployed; the conviction was just but he intended to return the money; no intention to defraud; he had no Counsel or character witness to support him in court; first offence; the prosecutor supports the petition.
