Description

Prisoner name(s): William Coombs.

Prisoner occupation: Cook's servant.

Court and date of trial: Oxford Lent Assizes 1825.

Crime: Stealing in a dwelling house a Bank Post Bill of £10 from Henry Somers Cocks of Christ Church College, Oxford.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Joseph and Elizabeth Coombs , of Oxford, parents and 11 people of the College and Oxford.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Prisoner is a young man, the only support to his distressed parents and known to many of the petitioners for many years as of unimpeachable character; his life is despaired of on the hulks.

Additional Information: Now on the hulks at Portsmouth.
