Description

Prisoner name(s): William Gooden.

Prisoner occupation: Town Agent and Traveller for John Edenborough and partners.

Court and date of trial: County of Middlesex Sessions held on 14 June 1821.

Crime: Embezzling the sum of £15 from John Edenborough, Thomas Chittenden and Thomas Bartlett April 1821.

Initial sentence: 14 years' transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): Considered by Lord Sidmouth 20 September 1821: nil.

Petitioner(s): 57 people with character references ; 12 members of the Jury; Prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good character for honesty and integrity; the Jury recommend mercy and hope he will return to an honest life; the convict entered into an agreement with the prosecutors concerning the amount of commission he could claim but they have not honoured what he is owed; he could have produced witnesses to support his case but did not have the chance; previous honest and irreproachable character.
