Description

Prisoner name(s): James Finch, Eliza Beard, Mary Moreland of Windsor, Berkshire.

Prisoner age: Finch: 73; Moreland: 61.

Prisoner occupation: James Finch: hangman at Lancaster Castle.

Court and date of trial: James Finch: Salford March Assizes 1809; Eliza Beard: General Quarter Sessions of the Peace held at Salford on 17 July 1820; Mary Moreland: Adjourned General Quarter Sessions of the Peace held at Salford, Lancaster on 19 July 1819.

Crime: James Finch: stealing in a bleaching ground to the value of over 10s; Eliza Beard: larceny - stealing 3 pairs of stockings property of Cornelius Ramsden of Manchester; Mary Moreland: felony - stealing from Mrs Mulliner of Salford a steel purse value 1d containing 4/6d.

Initial sentence: Finch: not stated.

Beard: Seven years transportation.

Moreland: Seven years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): All 'to be pardoned 8 October 1821'.

Petitioner(s): Lord Stanley, Foreman of the Grand Jury of the County of Lancaster recommending the convicts for a remission of their sentences; Mary Moreland; James Finch; Eliza Beard.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Finch: his advanced age and infirmities; has been confined 12 years; he is 'truly sensible of his transgressions'; asks to spend rest of his days under the care of his daughter; Moreland: her advanced age and good character; nothing stolen was found on her; she has been a widow 10 years; no previous offence; respectable family; has already served two years; Beard: she was destitute having married a person who wasted her money and left her while subject to epileptic fits; she is very sorry for the trouble she has caused and for her continuing care as she is still subject to fits; she asks to go into the workhouse or infirmary where she can be cared for.
