Description

Prisoner name(s): William Duff [William Bexell].

Prisoner age: 14.

Prisoner occupation: Cordwainer.

Court and date of trial: Surrey Summer Assizes 1821.

Crime: Horse stealing - stealing a gelding property of William Hellyer of Finchdean, Southampton.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to one year's imprisonment.

Petitioner(s): 25 inhabitants of Westbourn, Sussex and the neighbourhood.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Prisoner was persuaded by an old offender who had taken money from Duff; he had a good character previously; his father is a worthy man and has raised a large family 'in the habits of industry and honesty'.
