Description

Prisoner name(s): William Cox of Birmingham.

Prisoner age: 23.

Court and date of trial: Shrewsbury Easter Sessions 1821 held on 30 April 1821 for the County of Salop [Shropshire].

Crime: Stealing a set of gearing belonging to Mr Geary.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): Free pardon 18 October 1821.

Petitioner(s): Edward Harper, a Solicitor to the Association for the Prosecution of Felons of Madeley near Shifnal, Shropshire.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prosecutor was put to a great deal of trouble bringing witnesses from Birmingham; although sentenced to seven years, prisoner returned to Shrewsbury in a few months; he refused to show his discharge papers; he says his wife had an interview with His Majesty and then with Lord Sidmouth; only those 'of the lowest stamp' would have signed his petition; petitioner ask for an early investigation into whether the prisoner had obtained a proper discharge.
