Description

Prisoner name(s): Peter Atkins of Deal and Calais.

Prisoner occupation: Mariner.

Court and date of trial: Admiralty Sessions held in London 1807.

Crime: Plundering a wreck the cargo of the Endeavour of London wrecked on the Goodwin Sands.

Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Considered by Lord Sidmouth 20 September 1821.

Petitioner(s): Eight inhabitants of Deal, Kent including Edward Spencer Curling H M's Hanoverian Consul Deal, Dover and Ramsgate; Prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good conduct in South America but is now destitute in Calais with a wife and seven children dependent on him; good and exemplary conduct ever since; he is truly sorry for his crime; realises justice of his sentence; he wishes to return to his native country.

Other papers: Certificate of good conduct from J Fontlangue, Consul for the Northern Departments of France and Hanoverian Consul General.

Certificate of Peter Atkins' good conduct while working as issuing Clerk from 1808 to 1810 from Sir James Gambur, Consul General for the Portuguese Dominions of South America in Rio de Janeiro.
