Brigadier Thomas Denis Daly CBE MC was commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers in September 1914, and during the First World War he saw service in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. In the 1920s he held a number of staff posts in the Black Sea area with the British occupation forces followed by tours of regimental duty and staff posts both at home and with the Rhine Army.

Between 1932 and 1936 Daly served as Military Attaché in Belgrade, Prague and Bucharest. In 1938 he was appointed as a military member of the British Mission to Portugal. In 1939 he served for four months as Military Attaché in Berlin prior to the declaration of war.

From the outbreak of the hostilities until 1942 he held a number of appointments in the Home Forces as a Brigade Commander and Garrison Commander. In 1942 he was appointed OC Troops Jamaica and Inspector General of West Indies Local Forces. Later in the same year he was appointed Area Commander North Caribbean, a post he held until September 1944 when he was posted to Paris, firstly as Military Adviser and then Military Attaché. He was awarded the CBE in 1945 and retired from the Army in 1946.
