Description

Prisoner name(s): James Baldwin.

Prisoner age: 59.

Prisoner occupation: Tinman and brazier. Previously in the army for 13 years.

Court and date of trial: Lancaster Summer Assizes 1828.

Crime: Cutting and maiming.

Initial sentence: Sentence of death commuted to imprisonment for one year and fined ten pounds. Recognizance for good behaviour for three years.

Gaoler's report: Not stated.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Remit the fine but let him find the securities.'

Petitioner(s): James Baldwin (prisoner) undersigned by six people.

Justice Bayley of Bedford Square, [London].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is sorry for the offence; no previous crime committed; has no means to pay the ten pound fine; the prisoner has a wife and child dependent upon him; during his confinement the prisoner's conduct has been irreproachable and exemplary; the prisoner has been employed usefully in gaol; the prisoner served in His Majesty's 62nd Regiment of foot in the West Indies for seven years and Rochdale volunteers and Oldham local militia for six years. Justice Bayley believes that the chaplain will be given weight in the gaol if the prisoners have proof that his recommendations for good behaviour are successful.
