Description

Prisoner name(s): Charles Wall.

Prisoner age: 44.

Prisoner occupation: Private teacher and lecturer in natural philosophy.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey June Sessions 1829.

Crime: Stealing two shawls valued at 17/- on 8 April 1828 from the warehouse of Messrs Burbidge and Puzey of 58 Bread Street, London.

Initial sentence: Transportation for seven years.

Gaoler's report: 'Respectable connections.'

Annotated (Outcome): Free pardon 9 Dec 1831.

Petitioner(s): Charles Wall one undersigned by John Burbidge prosecutor Two petitions from by 28 people.

Eliza WallTwo petitions from (wife) owner of a Ladies Seminary in the Highgate Hill area, [London].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner failed to mount a proper defence because he believed that John Burbidge's declaration would ensure an acquittal; Puzey was vindictive; his attorney (Mr Platt) took a fee but abandoned the case; the prisoner's good character and highly respectable connections; the prisoner has two sons aged nine and ten; his wife is suffering through her husband's prosecution; the prisoner's association with John Burbidge led to the loss of his school and severe financial problems; John Burbidge took advantage of a misunderstanding in order to avoid reimbursing the prisoner for the board and lodging of himself and his nieces.

Other papers: Charles Wall's personal statement undersigned by John Burbidge and a covering note; Thomas Coventry of Piccadilly, [London] enclosing two petitions from Eliza Wall.
