Description

Prisoner name(s): Thomas Nicholl (or Thomas Nichols) alias Thomas Oram.

Prisoner age: 21.

Court and date of trial: Surrey Adjourned Sessions held at Newington on 17 June 1829.

Crime: Stealing a glazier's diamond.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'Character Bad. Convicted Before.'

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Ann Oram (prisoner's mother) of 10 Alfred Place, Old Kent Road, [Southwark] undersigned by 14 people including Isaac Malyon (prosecutor) of 3 Nelson Place, Old Kent Road, [Southwark, London].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner's youth; both the petitioner and prosecutor claim that starvation and misery drove the prisoner to commit the crime; prisoner tried to enlist as a soldier but was refused prisoner because of poor health; he was ashamed so tried under the false name of Thomas Nichols; the prisoner had no friends to appear in his favour at the trial; prisoner has truly repented his crime and will become a worthy member of society.
