Description

Prisoner name(s): James Knight.

Prisoner age: 29.

Court and date of trial: Clerkenwell June Sessions 1829.

Crime: Fraud. The prisoner represented himself to Charles Locke a journeyman baker of Allen Street, Clerkenwell, [London] as an attorney of His Majesty's Court of King's Bench.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Not known before. A sham attorney. Married one child.'

Annotated (Outcome): 'Deal him like any other seven year convict'.

Petitioner(s): James Knight (prisoner) undersigned by 53 people.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner denies the charge; the prisoner denied he was on the Roll of Attorneys but had been a solicitor's clerk for some years; the prosecutor told the prisoner that he was too poor to pay an attorney's bill for defending an action in which he had been arrested; the prisoner defended the action by making the prosecutor defendant in person without the assistance of an attorney and paying the costs out of pocket; the prisoner saved the prosecutor from ruin and Gaol; the prosecutor was expecting to receive some money and promised to advance the prisoner sufficient funds to commence a plumbing and glazing business; the prosecutor was so grateful that he advanced £50; the prisoner has never broken the law or been incarcerated before; the prisoner has always borne a good character for honesty, sobriety and industry; the prisoner has a wife and one child.

Additional Information: The prisoner is awaiting transportation in Newgate gaol.
