Description

Prisoner name(s): James White.

Prisoner age: 24.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey June Sessions 1829.

Crime: Stealing guinea fowls from the farmland of W H Wiggins of Watlington, [Oxfordshire].

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Not known.'

Petitioner(s): G P Cooke, an attorney of Watlington, [Oxfordshire]; 20 inhabitants of Watlington, [Oxfordshire] including W H Wiggins a farmer (prosecutor).

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): All four petitions are intended to prevent the prisoner receiving clemency; the prisoner is a notorious and abominable character; the prisoner has been confined several times for poaching and assault; the prisoner was committed to Oxford gaol for an assault on the keepers of the Earl of Macclesfield several months before his trial at the Old Bailey; a mitigation of the prisoner's sentence is unjust and will lead to fatal consequences for the inhabitants of Watlington and their property; the prisoner is a bad influence.

Other papers: A letter from John Fane Esquire MP of Wormsley Farm, Wormsley, Stokenchurch, [Buckinghamshire] with further evidence of White's bad character; a letter from John Fane enclosing the second petition.
