Description

Prisoner name(s): Fanny Stoker.

Prisoner age: 29.

Prisoner occupation: Servant.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey April Sessions 1829.

Crime: Stealing from employer - a pair of silk stockings valued at 6/- from the shop of George Wagner (prisoner's employer for two years) and his partner William Chapman in Greek Street, Soho Square, [London].

Initial sentence: 14 years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'A well behaved woman.'

Annotated (Outcome): Certificates returned.

Petitioner(s): George Wagner (prosecutor) and 3 people (previous employers) with notes of the trial and certificate details.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has an 'unblemished reputation'; the prisoner has been constantly employed for over 35 years; the prisoner is repentant of her crime one former employer has agreed to employ the prisoner; the prisoner was without money or counsel and no defence was offered.

Other papers: Two letters from James Ilbery a book seller, publisher and political writer of 1 Great Titchfield Street, Cavendish Square, [London] enclosing the petition and making observations about the case.

Additional Information: The prisoner is awaiting transportation in Newgate Gaol.
