Description

Prisoner name(s): William Savage.

Prisoner age: 20.

Court and date of trial: Norfolk Lent Assizes held at Thetford in 1829.

Crime: Offence against the Game Laws; poaching by night on the premises of William Fellowes Esquire of Haverland.

Initial sentence: 14 years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character suspected. Belongs to a gang. Married - 1 child.'

Annotated (Outcome): 'There is nothing in this petition'. In Van Diemen's Land. Nil.

Petitioner(s): James Bingle Minister; William Savage in Van Diemen's Land undersigned by 11 people.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner was guilty of committing the offence under the influence of alcohol and in a moment of folly; first offence; the prisoner might have received a more lenient sentence if he had known how to conduct a defence; the prisoner is honest and industrious.

Other papers: Edmond Wodehouse Magistrate of Thorpe near Norwich, [Norfolk] asking for Savage to be kept on the hulks; letter from Mr Hay transferring petition.
