Description

Prisoner name(s): Philip Levy.

Prisoner age: 25.

Prisoner occupation: Ironmonger and furniture broker.

Court and date of trial: Surrey Quarter Sessions held at Newington in June 1829.

Crime: Stealing 3 iron stoves.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character bad. In prison before and a receiver of stolen goods for a long time.'

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Philip Levy (prisoner) of the newly erected messuages on the Borough Road, [Surrey] undersigned by 17 people.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner bought the stoves for 16/6d from a tradesman; the prisoner was not given enough time by John Clifford to identify the tradesman; the prisoner did not know that they were stolen property; at the trial no evidence could be advanced that the prisoner had stolen the stoves and two witnesses corroborated his account of the unnamed tradesman; the prisoner is very young in business; the prisoner maintains his widowed mother and sisters by honest industry.
