Court and date of trial: Old Bailey 11 April 1828.
Crime: Murder of her child by either drowning or strangling him. The child's body was discovered in a ditch.
Initial sentence: Death.
Annotated (Outcome): 'I do not feel warranted interfering with the sentence of the law.' Nil.
Other papers: 3 letters from Thomas Flather of Grove Mile End - one a copy of letter to Lord Tenterden stating that the jury unanimously recommended mercy; evidence circumstantial - no proof that child found was the prisoner's; a letter from William Barre Marshall of 9 Beaufort Row Chelsea asking for a respite or reprieve for Welch; 2 letters from John Phillips concerning Doctor Marshall's petition. The petition had not yet been sent to Lord Tenterden who was at Hendon but was returned to Mr Peel.
Additional Information: The prisoner under sentence of death in Newgate Gaol on the 14 April 1828; the case was reported in the 'Times'.
