Court and date of trial: Leicester Quarter Sessions on the 13 July 1827.
Crime: Felony, stealing five bundles of worsted valued at 7/- from Davenport & Co.
Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.
Gaoler's report: Married. Character not known to the gaoler. She was spoken well of by several persons who appeared at the trial. State of health - a little indisposed at times being about eight months advanced in pregnancy.
Annotated (Outcome): 'Not to be transported.' For Penitentiary April 19. Free pardon prepared November 1829.
Petitioner(s): Catherine Ward (prisoner) undersigned by 36 inhabitants of Leicester, [Leicestershire] with a note from G Berkeley Mitchell Vicar of Saint Mary All Saints, Leicester, [Leicestershire] and Chaplain to the Borough Gaol.
Robert Ward (prisoner's husband) a framework knitter of Leicester undersigned by 22 members of the Leicestershire Militia.
Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has been of good character throughout her life and earned the esteem of her neighbours; the prisoner's three children require the support and superintendence of their mother; the gaol chaplain verifies that the prisoner has conducted herself with great propriety and every appearance of contrition throughout her two year confinement; the prisoner's husband served in the Leicestershire Regiment of Militia; the prisoner's husband was a clean, steady, sober and attentive soldier; the prisoner's husband is an excellent tradesman and can provide for his family.
