Description

Prisoner name(s): James Tomkinson (or John Tomlinson) alias Jonathan Wells.

Prisoner occupation: Coffee House owner.

Court and date of trial: Lincoln Lent Assizes 1828.

Crime: Horse stealing; prosecutor Mr Wilson.

Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil. May 7 1828.

Petitioner(s): James Tomkinson (prisoner).

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Prisoner did not realise how serious it was to use false name; did not know the horse was stolen; the prisoner has never committed an offence of such a serious nature and his trial was the first time he had appeared in court; the prisoner begs for mercy on behalf of his wife and young child.

Additional Information: In the Castle of Lincoln.
