Description

Prisoner name(s): John Thatcher.

Court and date of trial: Exeter City Easter Sessions 1828.

Crime: Embezzling the property of John Harvey (the prisoner's master) gunsmith of Exeter, [Devon] valued at 16/-.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Elizabeth Thatcher (prisoner's wife) of Saint George's Parish, Exeter, [Devon] undersigned by eight inhabitants of Exeter including the prosecutor.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The petitioner's wife distressed; the prisoner was seduced into committing the offence by an artful old offender; prisoner has never before committed an offence; the petition to prevent the prisoner's transportation has been signed by the prosecutor who is a respectable tradesman and the prisoner's former employer; in the event of mercy, the prisoner will once more become a useful member of society and impressed with the deepest gratitude.
