Description

Prisoner name(s): Dominic Taughram (or Dominick Taughram or Domonick Taughram).

Prisoner age: 22.

Court and date of trial: Warwick Lent Assizes in 1828.

Crime: Assault with intent to murder his landlord, Thomas Sherlock.

Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil. Certificates of character returned to the prisoner on the 13 March 1829.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from Dominic Taughram (prisoner). One petition is signed by William Mulloy Esquire JP Oakport House, [Roscommon, Ireland] and John French Dean of Elphin, [Roscommon, Ireland]; Thomas Taughram at Oxhill, [Warwickshire] (prisoner's father signed by Charles J Ceylon, William Mulloy Esquire JP and John French the Dean of Elphin.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is innocent; the prisoner's aged and unhappy parents are greatly distressed; the prisoner has always fulfilled his moral and social duties; his whole family will be destitute; no malice existed in the mind of the prisoner toward his prosecutor; after the prisoner's arrest, his landlords requested money; the prisoner had endured a 12 month confinement; excellent character testimonials.

Other papers: Letter from the prisoner requesting documents relating to his character; 2 letters John French the Dean of Elphin (landlord to the prisoner's father) forwarding the petition; the Gentlemen of Roscommon supporting the petition.

Additional Information: The prisoner was confined at Warwick Gaol, the York Hulk at Gosport, Hampshire and the Waterloo Spithead.
