Description

Prisoner name(s): Ellen Tarbett, Maria Hamilton.

Prisoner age: Ellen Tarbett 20; Maria Hamilton 30.

Court and date of trial: Ellen Tarbett Kirkdale County Sessions in 1828.

Maria Hamilton Liverpool Midsummer Sessions in 1828.

Crime: Ellen Tarbett robbed her master, a baker, of various sums of money by means of a false key.

Maria Hamilton obtained three trunks from on board a packet under false pretences.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): Ordered to Penitentiary 16 April 1828.

Petitioner(s): William Horner, Chaplain.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): William Horner is petitioning to prevent the prisoners' removal to London for transportation; Ellen Tarbett's previous character was excellent and there appears to be no doubt that she was a perfectly honest woman; Ellen Tarbett has never before been confined and her conduct in prison was good; Maria Hamilton was ill treated and came to Liverpool; her conduct in prison has been uniformly good; the prisoners may prove useful members of society.

Other papers: A letter from William Horner Chaplain, Kirkdale House of Correction, [Liverpool, Merseyside].

Lord Skelmersdale of Portland Place, [London] supporting Horner's recommendation.

Additional Information: The prisoners are awaiting transportation in the House of Correction, Kirkdale.
