Description

Prisoner name(s): Stephen Stubberfield ( or Stuberfield).

Prisoner occupation: Husbandman/steed carter/labourer.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey April Sessions in 1828.

Crime: Assembling with others armed to assist in landing uncustomed goods.

Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Considered at Report in Council 7 May 1828.

Petitioner(s): Stephen Stubberfield (prisoner) of Bexhill, Sussex with 18 signatories;

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has never before broken the law; the prisoner has supported his wife and four children by his own industry; the prisoner has led an honest, industrious and sober life as a husbandman; the prisoner deeply regrets his offence; the prisoner's wife had been in a state of extreme ill health for six months; prisoner was led astray; family likely to finish up in the workhouse; he will atone for his crime through hard work and industry.
