Description

Prisoner name(s): William Snow.

Prisoner occupation: Surgeon of Bow, [Devon].

Court and date of trial: [Devon Lent Assizes held at Exeter on the 24 March 1828.].

Crime: Publishing a libel.

Initial sentence: In the County Gaol of Devon (High Gaol) under sentence of six months imprisonment. At the expiration of the sentence the prisoner must find sureties to keep the peace for two years. The prisoner in the sum of £200 or £100 and two sureties in £100 or £50 each.

Annotated (Outcome): 'No reason for interfering unless his health becomes endangered.'

Petitioner(s): 10 petitions from William Snow(prisoner).

William Cole, the keeper of the Devon County Gaol, Exeter.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner appears to be considerably deranged by a love affair with his patient Mrs Reed (prosecutor); the prisoner is quiet and harmless but confinement will lead to further deterioration of health; the prisoner wants to resume his profession; Mrs Reed is an immoral woman who lied to Judge Littledale; the judge recommended that the case should be settled out of court but Mr Thetford had falsely accused the prisoner of being a drunkard at the trial; the prisoner's punishment has been far greater than his crime.
