Description

Prisoner name(s): James Sewell.

Prisoner age: 19.

Court and date of trial: Essex Epiphany Sessions in 1828.

Crime: Stealing mutton from the butcher's shop of James Bird (prosecutor) in Springfield, Essex.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character from gaol - indifferent.'

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Elizabeth Day (prisoner's sister) wife of William Day, a labourer, of Chelmsford, Essex undersigned by eight inhabitants of Chelmsford and Springfield including James Bird (prosecutor) and the Rector of Chelmsford.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has never before committed an offence and always borne a good character; the prisoner was only brought into this offence through his acquaintance with Joseph Dounan and James Goodey who reside in the same neighbourhood; the prisoner was not assisting Joseph Dounan and James Goodey but was found in their company on the night of the robbery; in the event of mercy, the prisoner will again become a useful and industrious member of society.

Annotated (Recommendation Details): Convicted with Joseph Dounan and James Goodey. The prisoner was awaiting transportation on board the York, Gosport, Hampshire.
