Description

Prisoner name(s): William Sellen.

Court and date of trial: Kent Lent Assizes 1828.

Crime: Housebreaking. The prisoner stole pork from Mr Long of Hucking, [Kent].

Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): William Sellen (prisoner) undersigned by 33 petitioners.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner's conviction was based on very circumstantial evidence; he has never before committed a crime but should atone for this offence through imprisonment or labour; was only induced to commit the crime by extreme want; the prisoner's wife and four young children are in very deep distress; the prisoner is anxious for his family's future welfare and dreads the approaching separation from them.

Additional Information: The prisoner is awaiting transportation in Maidstone Gaol.
