Description

Prisoner name(s): James Scott.

Prisoner age: 29.

Prisoner occupation: Employed by Thomas Doubleday a coal merchant of Eaton Wharf, Pimlico, London.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey 10 April 1828.

Crime: Stealing from employer. The prisoner embezzled £8 3s from Thomas Doubleday (employer) a coal merchant of Eaton Wharf, Pimlico.

Initial sentence: 14 years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Former character and conduct here very good.'

Annotated (Outcome): Free pardon 5 June 1834.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from James Scott (prisoner) of 7 Cliffords Row, Pimlico, Saint George Parish, Hanover Square, London. One petition is undersigned by 19 inhabitants of Saint George Parish, Hanover Square and Chelsea, [London] including a witness for the prosecution and R M Price the prisoner's former employer of 6 Rose Street, Covent Garden, [London].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The unimpeachable character of the prisoner and his family; the prisoner's father served the East India Company for 30 years; the prisoner has to support an afflicted wife, six children and an 80 years old mother in law; the prisoner has resided in Pimlico for the last 14 years and assisted in collecting Parochial Rates from 1818-1826; the prisoner's previous employer recommended him to the prosecutor for his trustworthiness and provided a security of £500; his behaviour in the case can be explained; the prisoner has been employed as a wards man in Newgate Gaol for the last six years without incurring a single complaint; in the event of a pardon, a coal merchant named Mr Ladd is willing to give the prisoner instant employment; the prisoner's health is suffering from his long confinement.
