Description

Prisoner name(s): Thomas Robinson.

Prisoner age: 28.

Prisoner occupation: Master cooper in Goswell Road, London.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey February Sessions 1828.

Crime: Stealing notes amounting to £50 from Edward Darby.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'A sharper.'

Petitioner(s): Thomas Robinson (prisoner) undersigned by 33 inhabitants of London.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner deeply laments his misconduct not only on his own account but on behalf of his pregnant wife and two small children who are entirely dependent on him for support; the prisoner is guilty of possessing the prosecutor's money through betting and gambling; the prisoner was under the impression that he had fairly won the prosecutor's money; the prisoner's counsel argued that the letter should not be received in evidence the prisoner kept a respectable house and business in Goswell Road, London for many years; the prisoner's offence does not merit such a harsh sentence, in the event of mercy, the prisoner will conduct himself in the strict path of rectitude and virtue.
