Description

Prisoner name(s): Ann Rawlings ( alias Ann Rawlins).

Prisoner age: 18.

Court and date of trial: Wiltshire Quarter Sessions held at Devizes on the 15 January 1828.

Crime: Stealing an infant - the daughter of Ann Compton.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character and disposition are pretty good. Not in prison before. The prisoner is unmarried, able to read and write and is in good health.

Annotated (Outcome): Ordered to Millbank Penitentiary on the 16 April 1828.

Petitioner(s): John and Sarah Rawlins (prisoner's parents) of Enford, Wiltshire undersigned by 30 inhabitants of Enford, Wiltshire.

J S Bucknall Estcourt Esquire (trial judge) chairman of the Wiltshire Quarter Sessions of 12 Lower Grosvenor Street, London.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner's youth; first offence; the prisoner might not have been fully aware of the extent of her crime; the prisoner is much affected by her conviction and exhorts her mother and sisters on their visits to avoid her company; the penitentiary's discipline will make an impression on a mind lacking moral example or institution; the penitentiary may be the means of restoring the prisoner as a reformed member of society.

Other papers: J Pyke the minister of Enford, Wiltshire enclosing and supporting petition; list of female convicts under sentence of transportation in the Fisherton Auger Gaol, Wiltshire. Signed by Thomas Dowding the Governor 9 April 1828.
