Court and date of trial: Devon Lent Assizes held at Exeter in 1828.
Crime: Horse stealing. The prisoner stole one horse from a field.
Initial sentence: The jury declared the prisoner insane before his trial for horse stealing. The prisoner was removed to Cornwall Lunatic Asylum on the 10 May 1828 until His Majesty's pleasure be known.
Annotated (Outcome): Warrant of discharge prepared for the 17 October 1831.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The Cornwall Lunatic Asylum's superintending physician and three other surgeons certify that the prisoner has been in a state of perfect mental sanity for 18 months; the Cornwall Lunatic Asylum's visiting justices are no longer authorised by the Royal Sign Manualto detain the prisoner in an asylum appropriated to the exclusive care of the insane; a certificate from the parish offices in Modbury proves that there will be no difficulty in finding employment for the prisoner; the prisoner is clever, talented and mild mannered.
