Prisoner occupation: Labourer of the parish of Maughold, [Isle of Man].
Court and date of trial: General Gaol Delivery, Castle Rushen, Isle of Man, 21 May 1829.
Crime: Rape, of Elizabeth Cowle (spinster) at Lezayre, Isle of Man, on 7 October 1828.
Initial sentence: Death [day of execution set for 19 June 1829].
Annotated (Outcome): 'The law to take its course, June 6'.
Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Intoxicated at the time of the offence.
Other papers: The Death Sentence. Letter from Cornelius Smelt (Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man) to Robert Peel informing him of the death sentence and requesting that His Majesty's Pleasure be made known to him. Further letter from Smelt to Peel transmitting minutes of the evidence. Minutes of the evidence. Further letter from Smelt to Peel stating that under Isle of Man Statute he requires the Secretary of State to signify His Majesty's Pleasure [rather than an official].
Additional Information: The correspondence also requests His Majesty's Pleasure be made known in the case of John Kneale and Patrick Quirk, convicted of grand larceny and sentenced to 14 years transportation at the same court.
