Description

Prisoner name(s): Robert Blythe.

Prisoner occupation: Magistrates' clerk, Woodbridge Division, Suffolk; also late assistant clerk to the Woodbridge Commissioners of Property Duties and Assessed Taxes, Woodbridge District.

Court and date of trial: Suffolk Quarter Sessions adjourned, Woodbridge, 29 April 1829.

Crime: Larceny; by stealing the sum of £26 10s 0d from a lost bag belonging to Robert Hayward (a miller from Melton, Suffolk) at Martlesham [Suffolk] on 13 April 1829.

Initial sentence: 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil June 11 1829'.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from Robert Blythe (the convict).

Other papers: Note from 'EM' [Edward Moor, a magistrate] [to the convict] declaring that he has no feeling of hostility toward him nor did the chair [the bench] or take part in the sentencing. Letter from J H Groome (chairman of the bench) to the convict lamenting the situation but stating that the trial was fairly conducted and it is not in his power to grant any relief. Judges' report on the case. Letter from the trial bench chairman accompanying the report. Statement of the case.

Additional Information: Held in Ipswich gaol [Suffolk]. The convict supplies much detail about his allegedly wrongful treatment by the authorities relating to monies that he was forced to make good whilst employed by the Commissioners of Property Duties.
