Description

Prisoner name(s): Jacob Williams.

Prisoner age: 14.

Prisoner occupation: Apprentice baker to George James of St James parish, Bristol [Gloucestershire].

Court and date of trial: Bristol Lent Assizes 1 April 1829.

Crime: Arson, namely setting fire to his master's bakery in the parish of St James, Bristol on 26 March 1829.

Initial sentence: [Death recorded] and commuted to 14 years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil June 2 1829'. 'Nil. In Van Diemens Land. Answered 30 Jan 1839'.

Petitioner(s): Thomas Williams (a weekly carrier) and Martha Williams (parents) together with Jacob Williams (the convict), supported by an attached medical certificate from [William Hithing] and undersigned by George James (prosecutor) and 38 inhabitants of [Bristol] known to [the convict's parents]. Thomas Williams.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): In his infancy [1817] the convict suffered head injuries when he was run over by a dray, rendering him mentally impaired; consequently he did not know what he was doing nor the possible consequences; his first offence; having accepted him as apprentice with a premium of ten pounds, his master wanted to rid himself of his duty but keep the money and so contrived to frame the convict; the good character of the parents.

Other papers: Letter from R Hart Davies [MP] transmitting the petition to the Home Department.
