Description

Prisoner name(s): John Stacey ( or John Stacy).

Prisoner age: 16.

Prisoner occupation: Apprentice letter-press printer.

Court and date of trial: Westminster Sessions [Middlesex] September 1828.

Crime: Assault (on an infant) with intent to ravish, namely a girl named Fynes (or Fines).

Initial sentence: 18 months imprisonment.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil June 2 1829' [and 5 Aug 1829].

Petitioner(s): Edward Stacey and Frances Stacey (parents), two applications. [Lewis Lovat], Henry Warren and George Harvey (newspaper employees known to the convict's father).

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): His youth; his health; he has already served eight months of the sentence although innocent of the crime as the girl had [venereal] disease but the convict did not and therefore he could not have infected her; the false charge was laid by the girl's parents to hurt the feelings of the convict's parents rather than to serve the ends of justice; imprisonment will efface from the convict's memory all knowledge of his trade due to lack of use.

Other papers: Medical certificate by Henry Wakefield, Surgeon to the House of Correction, where the convict's health has suffered considerably from his imprisonment.

Additional Information: Held in Cold Bath Fields House of Correction.
