Description

Prisoner name(s): John Parsons.

Prisoner age: 73.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey, November (or December) 1828.

Crime: Stealing a parcel of twelve locks to the value of £1 4s 0d belonging to Edward Carman (or Edward Spearman and others).

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Transported before'. 'Conduct good on board the Cumberland'. 'Invalid'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'.

Petitioner(s): John Parsons (the convict). Susannah Parsons (wife) undersigned by Mrs Payne (convict's daughter).

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): His great age; he has an aged wife; he cannot work because of his incapacity and he fears his early demise if he is not liberated; deepest sorrow for the offence; since his conviction he has inherited 'considerable property' sufficient to make both he and his wife comfortable for the rest of their lives but only he can receive the same and if he dies [in custody] it will be lost entirely; His daughter undertakes to provide for the convict and his wife if he be liberated.

Additional Information: He was originally sent to the Dolphin hulk until it foundered and he suffered from long immersion in the water. He was then placed on board the Canada hulk where he fell from a pile of timber and ruptured himself.
