Court and date of trial: West Riding of Yorkshire Michaelmas Quarter Sessions, Sheffield, October 1828.
Crime: [Stealing from the person] of John Copely ten shillings in silver coin believed to have arisen from a gambling transaction.
Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.
Annotated (Outcome): Enquiry to be made as to conduct on the hulks.
Petitioner(s): George Leech (the convict) undersigned by 14 manufacturers of Barnsley and supported by a letter from W Alderson (trial judge) addressed to Lord Wharncliffe together with a response addressed to the [Home Department] in the convict's favour.
Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): His previous irreproachable character; his crime did not originate in any hardened or vicious principles; the under-signatories to the petition are willing to employ him if he is liberated.
Other papers: Letter from Henry Jackson transmitting a memorial [not present] from the inhabitants of Barnsley in opposition to the petition for the convict's release.
Additional Information: Held on board Dolphin convict hulk. He was indicted with an accomplice named Goodyeare. The crime also involved three others, un-named [who appear not to have apprehended].
