Description

Prisoner name(s): Henry Jeffery.

Prisoner age: 36.

Prisoner occupation: Blacksmith, of Plymouth, Devon; formerly of Ivy Bridge, parish of Ugborough, Devon.

Court and date of trial: Plymouth Borough Quarter Sessions, May 1829.

Crime: Larceny or felony - receiving some stolen copper, the property of William Moore.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Has borne a very good character. Married'. 'Behaviour on board the Captivity - Very Good'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Ordered to hulks'. 'Not to be transported. To wait the recommendation if he behaves well. June 9 [1829]'. 'Too early, 30 July 1830'. 'Nil' [Jan 1831].

Petitioner(s): Henry Jeffery (the convict) two applications with two separate fair copies. William Moore (prosecutor) two applications with two separate fair copies. 30 inhabitants of Plymouth with two separate fair copies. 68 inhabitants of Ivy Bridge and its environs. 50 inhabitants Plymouth and Ivy Bridge.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): He had no knowledge of the goods being stolen property; he has no previous convictions; he has an irreproachable character which was proved at his trial.
