Administrative / biographical background

The Allied forces under command of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary landed in France in June 1944 to liberate enemy occupied Europe and to conquer Germany. The Headquarters of the British 21st Army Group formed the tactical headquarters for the cross-Channel move and for the land operation immediately following.

In January, 1943, even before the Supreme Allied Commander was appointed, his Chief of Staff organisation was set up to plan the cross-Channel invasion.
