Defence Planning Division was created in 1966 as part of the Ministry of Transport within Ports, Shipping and Defence. In 1971 it became part of the Department of the Environment, Transport Industries, until 1988 when it passed to the Department of Transport. Rresponsibility passed to Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions in 1997, Department of Transport Local Government and the Regions in 2001 and Department for Transport from 2002.
