The International Trade Policy Division was formed from Commercial Relations and Exports Division 1 in 1981 and had responsibility for policy issues relating to general trade policy and General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) questions, the administration of import licensing, general import and commodity policy, international investment and multinational enterprises, anti-dumping, duty relief and origin rules. In 1987 the division was renamed the External European Policy Division and in 1991 it reverted to its original name - the International Trade Policy Division.
