Administrative / biographical background

To 1985, policy records concerning financial institutions were created under the Domestic Economy Sector, Home Finance Group, Financial Institutions Division. From 1985, a new Public Finance [sector] was introduced. Banking policy matters were managed under this sector by the Home Finance Group and there under the Financial Institutions Division. The organisational titles had changed by1986 to the Financial Institutions and Markets Group, Banking Division; still under the same sector. In 1992 the Division name changed to the Banking and Mutuals Division.

The function of the Division was: all business with the government's banker; The Bank of England; the prudential supervision of all banks and deposit taking institutions; National Girobank; European Community banking legislation; proposed banking supervision legislation; building societies, Building Societies Commission and the Registry of Friendly Societies; National Loans Fund policy and Societies; currency and coinage and The Royal Mint.
