Folios 147-148.
To: The General Board of Health.
From: Thomas Thornton, Clerk to the Local Board of Health, Bishop Auckland [Durham].
Letter informing that the Bishop Auckland Local Board has decided to obtain a water supply for the town from a spring in a field called White Oaks, about a mile and a half away from the town. It is explained that as the General Board of Health consider a quantity of 14 or 15 gallons of water per head per day to be too limited the Local Board propose to erect a steam engine of about 14 horse power near the River Wear for the purpose of pumping the filtered river water as an auxiliary supply. Thornton adds that the plans and sections for the sewerage of the district are not yet completed and enquires whether it would be desirable to delay the preparation of the plans for the water supply until they are done. He further states that it is important to delay the matter as little as possible as the present water supply to the public is generally very insufficient 'and is very seriously felt'.
