Folios 658-659.
To: The General Board of Health.
From: T L Pridham, Surgeon, Bideford [Devon].
Letter re-enclosing a printed statement dated 13 November 1857 by Pridham 'showing the abuse' he has met with from many members of the Local Sanitary Board 'for endeavouring to call their attention to the bad state of the town drainage, owing to which such sad results in sickness and mortality have in a great measure arisen'. Pridham suggests that Sanitary Board is composed chiefly of owners of small tenements who 'consequently imagine their interests are jeopardised by any statement of the true condition of town, and are aware of the evils which exist' but do not wish 'to draw out the ill feelings of their fellow townsmen by any interference'. Pridham hopes that the House of Commons will see the necessity of the General Board's proposed Bill to amend the Health of Towns Act 1848.
