The Machine Tools and Manufacturing Machinery Division was formed in 1970 and composed of branches dealing with three aspects of the industry:- machine tools and welding machinery, manufacturing machinery and mechanical handling equipment. In 1972 the Mechanical Engineering Division was created which consisted of the three branches above and two branches concerned with vehicles and agricultural equipment and other mechanical engineering products which transferred from the Vehicles and Mechanical Engineering Products Division which itself was abolished in 1972. In 1974 the Division was transferred to the Department of Industry and in 1975 it was renamed the Machine Tools and Mechanical Engineering Division with responsibility for the metal working machine tools, manufacturing machinery, railway equipment and office machinery industries. Responsibility for the vehicles and agricultural equipment industries passed to Vehicle Division. In 1980 the Division was renamed the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Division
