Enclosed copy of a letter (dated 25 April) from Captain Charlton commander of HMS 'Lively' concerning the taking of a French ship 'Le Duc de Vendome' off the Isle of Lewis, laden with arms and ammunition for the [Jacobite] rebels in the Pretender's [James Edward Stuart's] service. Having kept the captain of the (14 gun) vessel (one Jacques Creste claiming to be sailing for Newfoundland) and crew prisoner, a Scotsman was also found on board with letters from a relative of Lord Seaforth and news of the rescue of several Clan leaders.
