Extract of a letter from Commander Swanton relating to the intelligence brought to him from Brest in February. Regards the stationing of eight companies of an old regiment in garrison, with few other troops in the vacinity, excepting some invalids on the shore batteries. Recruiting for the Duke of Lorraine's Regiment at 4 pistoles a man (very few enlisting) and for the Regent's [Philippe of Oreleans] Guards (none to be under 6 foot 4 inches in height), the ships at Port Louis and Rochefort being very much out of repair.
