The Commercial Relations and Export Division was responsible for policy on trade matters and exports including export licensing. It was succeeded by the Overseas Trade Division in 1981. A new Division was established in 1994, the Export Control and Non-proliferation Division, to deal with export control and licensing.
The Commercial Relations and Exports Division was concerned with export policy, general questions on export assistance, commercial policy aspects of trade with developing countries, responsibility for the UK's relationship with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), general commercial policy including GATT questions, general policy maters affecting the oil producing countries and the administration of export licensing controls.
