The Western European and General Division was formed in 1980 when it replaced the General Division which worked alongside the Commercial Relations and Exports Division.
The Western European and General Division was divided into two branches: Branch 1 was responsible for commercial relations and trade policy with Western Europe and the European Community, Community legislation, preferential trade agreements, enlargement negotiations, industrial and common agricultural policy; and Branch 2 which was engaged in developing policy on corrupt practices in international trade, energy, employment, industry in relation to the National Economic Development Council and civil emergencies.
The Western European and General Division was succeeded by the European Commercial and Industrial Policy Division in 1984.
