Description (What the record is about)
-
Selected registered files of the Treasury Solicitor in the WO series relating to case work on behalf of the War Office. The files relate to transactions, claims and advice across a broad range of topics including matters arising from wartime requisition of land, buildings and horses for defence purposes, and arbitration in disputed valuations. Post-war claims for damage to property arising from de-requisitioning, and death or personal injury claims resulting from exploding mines and grenades are also included in the series, along with proceedings brought against the War Office in respect of arrest and court martial. Funds held by the British military authorities for Polish servicemen were the subject of several claims by trustees of charities. In addition, certain War Office publications in the Crusader gave rise to claims for libel and infringement of copyright.
Correspondence was kept within the registered file cover, but court papers, transcripts, reports and other documents were generally bundled and tied to the correspondence file.
