Administrative / biographical background

Before 2006, The Wales Tourist Board was an Assembly Sponsored Public Body (ASPB) answerable to the Minister for Economic Development and Transport of the National Assembly for Wales executive government and before 1999 to the Welsh Office it was a Quasi Autonomous Non-Government Organisation (QUANGO). It was established under the Development of Tourism Act 1969. As a QUANGO / ASPB its role was to independently implement the government policy on Welsh tourism.

On 14 July 2004 the First Minister declared that the Welsh Development Agency, the Wales Tourist Board (WTB) and the National Council for Education and Training (ELWA) was to merge with the National Assembly for Wales by April 2006. The Wales Tourist Board was formerly not a public record (or Welsh public record) body. It was subsumed by the Welsh Assembly Government in 2006 under the Government of Wales Act 2006 which transformed the records into Welsh public records. The Wales Tourist Board had responsibility for the development of tourism in Wales.
